Once a year WTUL asks for our listeners' help to keep us on air and thriving. And what do you know, that time is now!
WTUL is a volunteer-run listener-supported college radio station.
We're chaotic, a bit rough-around-the-edges, and we own it. Most of our staff, including our executive board, are students. That means high turnover and inexperience are built into what we do, but it also keeps us high-energy, constantly evolving, and full of passion. We hope that comes through when you listen to us.
We've been bringing progressive sounds to New Orleans since 1959, and it's in our mission statement to serve our community with under-served music. Listening to WTUL means you'll inevitably hear something uniquely awful, but also something uniquely amazing. So long as it's something exciting and unexpected, that's what we're in for.
Tulane does provide a decent portion of our budget, not to mention housing our studio and broadcast equipment. But with your help we've been able to do more.
Recently with listener donation help
- We replaced our failing antenna.
- We moved the location of our antenna to a location that allows us to better reach the Bywater, Chalmette, and more.
- We've started building our our Studio B, another room next to our studio that will help us with production and will allow us to update our main studio.
But even when we're not moving forwards, we have to cover the basics. Equipment fails. Services such as web hosting require subscription fees. And we have to pay royalties. And we need to have a rainy-day fund for when things happen like our antenna failing, which it did.
We don't raise as much as other stations. But with an almost entirely volunteer staff and a practical, music-focused approach, a little bit goes a long way. And a lotta bit goes a lot further.
What makes us happy as DJs is knowing that what we're putting out is heard, and appreciated. And the best way to let us know, is a donation during Marathon.
